How MCP Gives Your AI Coding Tools a Design System

·Refine Design

Every time you start a new chat in Cursor, your AI forgets everything. The color palette you established yesterday? Gone. The typography scale you carefully chose? Reset to defaults. The spacing system you spent an hour getting right? Replaced with p-4 and gap-6.

This is the session boundary problem, and it's why AI-built projects drift toward inconsistency the moment they span more than one conversation.

Enter MCP

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI tools read external data sources. Think of it as giving your AI a reference library it can consult before writing code.

When you add Refine Design as an MCP server in Cursor, your AI gains access to your complete design system — every color, font, spacing value, component pattern, and design decision you made during onboarding.

How it works

Step 1: Set up the connection

Add this to .cursor/mcp.json:

``json

{

"mcpServers": {

"dzyne": {

"url": "https://dzyne.app/api/mcp/mcp"

}

}

}

`

Step 2: Start any coding session

At the beginning of your chat, tell Cursor:

> "Call get-design-profile for project 'my-project'"

Cursor calls the Refine Design MCP tool and receives your full design profile: colors (with shade scales), typography (with modular type scale), spacing, borders, shadows, and component patterns.

Step 3: Build normally

Now every component Cursor generates uses your tokens. bg-primary-600 instead of bg-blue-600. font-heading instead of a random Google Font. rounded-md mapped to your specific radius, not Tailwind's default.

The available tools

Refine Design exposes several MCP tools beyond get-design-profile`:

  • check-design-consistency: Paste in component code and get a line-by-line audit against your design profile
  • generate-component-library: Generate a full component library (buttons, cards, inputs, navs) that follows your design system
  • redesign-page: Analyze an existing website and generate a CSS-only redesign using design fundamentals
  • generate-layout: Create page layouts with proper spacing, hierarchy, and visual rhythm

Each tool reads your saved design profile, so recommendations and generated code are always on-brand.

Why this matters

Without MCP, design consistency in AI-assisted development requires constant vigilance — manually pasting color codes, correcting font choices, fixing spacing inconsistencies. It's the digital equivalent of a developer with amnesia rebuilding the same house differently each day.

With MCP, the design system becomes ambient context. Your AI doesn't need to be reminded — it already knows.

The result: you move faster, your output is more consistent, and your sites stop looking like every other AI-built project on the internet.
